Where Lorem Ipsum actually comes from (and why it's still used)
"Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit" has appeared in more mockups, brochures, and half-finished websites than almost any other block of text ever written, and yet almost nobody who's typed it into a design has read what it actually says. That's not an accident. It's the entire point of the passage, and the story behind it is a real one, not an urban legend.
It's scrambled Cicero, not nonsense Latin
The standard Lorem Ipsum passage is derived from a genuine work of classical Latin literature: Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum ("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), a philosophical text written around 45 BC. The phrase "Lorem ipsum" itself doesn't mean anything in Latin. It's a fragment, broken across a page boundary, of the real Latin phrase "dolorem ipsum," meaning roughly "pain itself." Sometime, most likely in the 1500s, a printer took a passage from Cicero's text and scrambled it: words reordered, some altered or removed, extra words inserted, punctuation added, until the result read as plausible Latin sentence structure without saying anything coherent. It's genuinely Latin-derived, genuinely old, and genuinely meaningless, all three at once.
Five centuries as filler text
This kind of scrambled placeholder text has been used in publishing and typesetting since at least the 1500s, well before anyone called it "Lorem Ipsum" specifically. Printers needed sample text to show how a typeface or page layout looked before real copy was ready, and a passage that looked like ordinary prose, without being ordinary prose that a reader might start actually reading and critiquing, suited the job perfectly. The practice stayed a small, mostly print-industry habit for centuries.
How it became the default
Lorem Ipsum went from print-shop tradition to genuinely standard in the 20th century for two specific reasons. First, Letraset, a company that made dry-transfer lettering sheets widely used by graphic designers before digital typesetting, included passages of Lorem Ipsum on its sample sheets in the 1960s, putting it in front of a whole generation of working designers. Second, when desktop publishing software arrived, Aldus PageMaker (one of the first mainstream page-layout programs, released in 1985) shipped with Lorem Ipsum as its default placeholder text. From there it propagated into essentially every design tool that needed filler copy, and it's been the default ever since, including in the generator on this page.
Why meaningless text, on purpose
The obvious alternative would be to fill a mockup with real sentences. Designers deliberately don't, for a specific reason: real, legible, meaningful text pulls a reader's attention into reading it, evaluating the words rather than the layout. Put an actual paragraph of English into a homepage mockup and a reviewer's eyes go straight to whether the copy is good, whether the tone is right, whether that sentence is too long, none of which is the question a layout review is supposed to answer. Lorem Ipsum sidesteps that entirely. It looks enough like real prose, in letter-frequency, average word length, and the mix of long and short words that give a paragraph its visual texture and density on the page, that a design reads exactly the way it would with real copy in place. But because it isn't decodable as meaningful language, nobody starts reading it. The eye can evaluate spacing, line length, and typographic rhythm without the brain being pulled into comprehension.
The practical upshot
That's also why Lorem Ipsum tends to outperform genuinely random text (random strings of letters, or word-salad generators with no grammatical structure) for this purpose. Its Latin origin gives it real sentence and word-length patterns, closer to actual prose than gibberish would be, while its unfamiliarity to virtually every reader keeps it from being read as content. A generator that produces it by paragraph, sentence, or word count, the way the one on this page does, is really just automating a five hundred-year-old typesetting trick: give the eye something that behaves like text, without giving the brain anything to read.
